Workshop: Strengthening Biosafety and access to information. Implementing the Aarhus Convention in practice.

  • Countries: Armenia
  • Green topic: Environmental data

Date: 11-13 March 2026.

In the framework of the EU4Green Recovery East programme, a delegation from the Republic of Armenia will visit Vienna to participate in a technical training programme on the detection and control of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from 11 to 13 March. The visit supports the practical implementation of Armenia’s recently adopted GMO legislation and its international commitments under the Aarhus Convention and its GMO amendment.

Armenia’s GMO law establishes the powers of the Government and authorised bodies in the fields of agriculture, health, and environment, including the regulation of import, export, experimental use, and biosafety procedures. Importantly, the law guarantees the right of everyone to request and obtain non-confidential information related to GMO use, in accordance with the Law “On Freedom of Information” and Armenia’s international obligations.

The training in Vienna will strengthen national laboratory capacity in GMO detection, quality control, and monitoring. Reliable laboratory systems are essential for generating accurate environmental information, responding to public information requests, and ensuring transparent and evidence-based decision-making.

By reinforcing technical expertise, the project contributes directly to the effective implementation of the access-to-information principles of the Aarhus Convention, enhances public trust, and supports Armenia in advancing biosafety governance in line with international standards.
